MISSION MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS

1. Applicants to the Mission are required to undergo the Prenovitiate period that is divided into two stages, namely, Aspirancy and Postulancy.

2. The Aspirancy should be for at least three months long. During this stage, the Aspirants start to learn by heart the nature of the Mission in particular and of the Religious Life in general and to respond diligently to the demands of the apostolate. During Aspirancy, the applicant may opt to live outside but is required to visit the Community from time to time, or stay in the Community on weekends.

3. The Local Superior may accept the Aspirant to the Postulancy which lasts for at least six months and may take place in one of the houses of the Congregation or in a house not belonging to the Congregation but under the guidance of the Formator designated by the General Council. During the Postulancy, the applicant is obliged to live full-time in the Community as he continues to learn the life and work in the Mission.

4. Towards the end of Postulancy, the applicant asks in writing for admission to the Novitiate.

5. The Postulant may be accepted to the Novitiate provided that he is already 17 years old and meets all requirements. He must be healthy, has a suitable disposition and sufficient maturity to undertake the formation and to live in the Community under the authority of the Superior. Accordingly, the following documents must be submitted and verified prior to the Novitiate:

a. Certificates of Birth, Baptismal, and Confirmation
b. Diploma or Transcript of Records (he must be at least a high school graduate)
c. Letter of Recommendation (from Parish Priest and/or previous employer)
d. Medical Certificate
e. Letter of Declaration regarding Impediments

6. The Local Superior may dismiss an Aspirant or Postulant for just and valid reasons. Admission to the Novitiate depends on the decision of the General Superior and his Council with consideration to the evaluation and recommendation of the Local Community regarding each individual Postulant.

7. The Mission accepts lay volunteers through the Gualandi Volunteers Service Program (GVSP).
GOAL AND SPIRIT OF THE MISSION

1. The particular goal of the Mission is the intellectual, moral, religious, and social education of the Deaf. Towards this goal, every member of the Mission has to consecrate all his intelligence, his energy, and his activities, that is, his whole self for the love of God and for the salvation of the souls of the Deaf. This goal expresses the particular spirit of the Mission and every member dedicates himself and to offers fervent prayers everyday to the Lord to achieve and to preserve this goal.

2. The evangelization and the religious education of the Deaf can be achieved through helping them to go to school, teaching them catechism, opening and supporting learning centers, and extending pastoral assistance to the organizations of the Deaf.

3. To be able to live in the spirit of the Mission is absolutely necessary for anyone who desires to become its member and to be of help to it. A person who is full of love for the Deaf can do much for their good even if he does not possess many talents or a high intelligence. On the other hand, a person who is rich in abilities but poor in love towards the Deaf and works only for his own good and not for the Deaf, can neither be of help to the Mission nor be a part of it.

4. The love for the Deaf must be inspired by one’s faith in God and love for Him. The Deaf may evoke interest and compassion because of their disability but the desire to help them must have its own foundation above all in the love for God alone. It is necessary therefore to see in the deaf people, as in the least and suffering among our neighbors, the person of Jesus Christ who teaches that whatever we do to the least of our brothers and sisters, we also do to him. (see Mt. 25:31-45)

5. In healing the Deaf, Jesus Christ in the Gospel is giving us an example of love and compassion towards the Deaf that inspires us in our Mission. We should always offer to Him all our initiatives for the good of the Deaf in order to obtain the grace that makes them bear the best results. (see Mk. 7:31-37)

6. The most important task of the Religious is to work for the spiritual welfare of the Deaf. Their souls are precious, being created by God, redeemed by the Blood of Jesus Christ and destined to receive the reward of eternal joy in heaven.
MISSION HISTORY

1. The Mission was officially founded by Fr. Giuseppe Gualandi in Bologna, Italy. It was canonically established as the Pious Congregation of the Patriarch St. Joseph and of St. Francis de Sales on August 15, 1872.

2. The Mission was born from the encounter between Fr. Giuseppe Gualandi and a young deaf girl, Carolina Galuppini, on July 8, 1849 during Mass for first communicants.

3. Fr. Giuseppe Gualandi’s first encounter with the Deaf made him realize that in the society and in the Church the Deaf were isolated and lived in ignorance in matters of faith and morals because of their disability. Accordingly, he decided to dedicate himself for their education and evangelization.

4. The Mission was started with the support of the entire Gualandi family. Fr. Cesare Gualandi, the younger brother of Fr. Giuseppe, became the first Superior of the Congregation.

5. Since 1884, the Mission has been officially known as the Little Mission for the Deaf or in Italian, Piccola Missione per i Sordomuti.

6. The motto of the Mission is “God Alone” as it works for the Deaf for the greater glory of God alone in their lives. The motto is found on the official logo of the Mission portraying the Sacred Heart of Jesus who is invoked for the extension of God’s kingdom to the Deaf.

7. The Mission was officially recognized as a clerical institute of pontifical right officially on July 1, 1913. It is composed of Religious Priests and Brothers inspired by the universal mission of the Church given by Jesus Christ to preach the Gospel to all, including the Deaf.

8. The Mission arrived in the Philippines on October 28, 1988. It is presently located at 5 Emerald St., St. Michael Village, Barangay Kasambagan, Cebu City.

9. The Mission was registered at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC Reg. No. 161454)) on March 20, 1989 under the name Local Superior of the Mission for the Deaf, Inc. It was amended as Gualandi Mission for the Deaf, Inc. on February 19, 2007 in honor of its founder’s 100th death anniversary.
